Getting a haircut can be stressful for children with autism, especially if they experience sensitivities to touch, sound, or unfamiliar surroundings. That’s why Inner Circle Autism Network has teamed up with Pigtails & Crewcuts to host Sensory Snips, a free event designed to create a calm, comforting, and inclusive environment for haircuts. On Wednesday, March 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., families can enjoy a sensory-friendly salon experience. You can reserve a spot by calling (507) 227-4436.

How ABA Therapy at iCAN Can Help Prepare Kids for a Haircut

If your child sometimes has a difficult time with activities like haircuts, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy can be a useful tool. ABA is designed to help children navigate everyday activities like using public restrooms, visiting the doctor, or going to the grocery store. Here’s how:

  1. Desensitization and Gradual Exposure
ABA techniques often involve slowly introducing a child to the stimuli or environment they find challenging. In preparation for a haircut, a therapist might practice gentle head-touching or use toy clippers at home to help the child become accustomed to the sound and sensation.
  2. Reinforcement of Positive Behaviors
Positive reinforcement is a cornerstone of ABA therapy. When a child tolerates the sound of a hair dryer or the gentle touch of a comb, they receive the encouragement and knowledge it takes to navigate these moments. This encourages them to repeat these calm behaviors at the salon.
  3. Visual Schedules and Social Stories
Therapists and caregivers can create simple pictorial guides (visual schedules) or short, personalized stories (social stories) to walk a child through the haircut process.
  4. Creating a Safe Space
By turning a haircut into a structured, step-by-step process, children gain a sense of control. ABA strategies focus on reducing triggers and making the environment feel safe — a philosophy Pigtails & Crewcuts shares by offering a sensory-friendly salon experience.

This free, one-of-a-kind event is a fantastic way to introduce your child to haircuts in a calm, fun setting. Call Pigtails & Crewcuts at (507) 227-4436 to book your appointment — space is limited, and we want every child to have the quality time they deserve in the salon chair. We look forward to seeing you there and celebrating each step forward in your child’s journey.
